Penn National Betting App

12 August 2020

It has been announced that Penn National has decided to launch its Barstool Sportsbook app in Pennsylvania. The launch has been scheduled for September this year, and it was also revealed that it would be launched in more states across the country by the first quarter of next year. The data was revealed in Penn National’s second-quarter earnings release.

The release also revealed that during the second quarter of this year the company suffered massive losses due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Revenue stood at just over $305 million, which reflected a drop of nearly 77% compared to the same period last year. This huge drop in revenue due to COVID-19 have been mirrored by most other sports betting companies in the country.

Move from August to September

Penn National was originally planning to launch its Barstool sportsbook app in August this year, but this has now been rescheduled for next month. According to the CEO of the company, Jay Snowden, a lot of progress has been made with the app over recent weeks. Snowden said:

We have already seen very high levels of interest in the Barstool Sportsbook app from the Barstool audience as well as on a wide range of social media platforms, and we are extremely excited about Barstool’s plans to introduce the app to their growing and loyal audience.

He also said that while the app could have been launched earlier in the year, the company wanted to wait in order to provide a superior experience to sports fans. He said that launching earlier than September would have meant there was minimal competition, and the company preferred to delay the launch and get it just right.

After careful consideration, the company decided that delivering a great experience with a later launch was more important than rushing the release in order in time for some MLB and NBA games in August. Snowden said that Penn National was ‘in this for the long game’ and is eager to impress sports fans when the app is finally launched.

Revealing some details about the Barstool sportsbook app, Snowden said that it had been designed to be intuitive, user-friendly, and packed with valuable features. This includes a travel wallet, its bet-slip feature, and exclusive betting opportunities. He added that these features would help the app stand out from competitors.

The state for the initial launch had been kept under wraps until now, but many are not surprised to learn that the app will first make its appearance in Pennsylvania. Penn National already has an online casino in operation in the state, which means that it can cross-sell as it rolls the new app out.

It was also confirmed that the app would be rolled out to other states by the first quarter of 2021, although there was no information provided on which states would be next to get the app. However, Snowden did go as far as to say that the company was eager to roll out the app in Michigan in the near future.
